CAMPER AGES: 6-12 grade

TYPE OF CAMP: Overnight/Sleepaway.

CAMPER GENDER(S): Coed Campers.

CAMP INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES OFFERED:
Wilderness/Nature, Sailing, Adventure, Travel, and more.

CAMP LOCATION: Our tall ship is berthed at the St. Augustine Municipal Marina, located in historic downtown St. Augustine. Our target sailing area are the waters between St. Augustine, FL and Cumberland Island, GA.

CAMP FACILITIES: Freedom is an authentic replica of a nineteenth century blockade-runner. She is a double masted, gaff-rigged, topsail schooner. Naval architect Merritt Walters and his marine construction company, Rover Marine, Inc., designed and built Freedom, the first of his many Rover schooners, in 1982 in Norfolk, Virginia.

The Schooner Freedom is built of steel with aluminum masts and spars. The Freedom’s sparred length is 76 feet while her length on deck is 64 feet. Freedom’s beam is a 15 feet 4 inches and her draft is a little less than 6 feet. Her mast height is 62 feet and she carries a total sail area of 2400 feet. She has bunks for 20 overnight passengers, 2 captains, and 4 crew. She has a complete galley, salon, and head. She carries all the appropriate safety and life saving gear, which, along with the crew and vessel, is inspected and licensed by the United States Coast Guard on an annual basis.

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: This upcoming summer we are proud to announce that we will be offering 2 one week-long sailing camps. Sailors will be placed in the week that corresponds with the grade they will be entering. The sailing camp introduces teens to life aboard a classic schooner while sailing the northeast Florida and southeast Georgia coast.

Campers will come aboard and take over! We will have a blast sailing, fishing, swimming, exploring barrier islands, kayaking, and making memories to last a lifetime. Parents will be kept updated on their sailors location and fun by frequent blog posts and a closed Facebook group, updated at least twice daily.

Nothing gives a sailor more joy than knowing they can confidently take the helm or set a sail on a tall ship. Our goal is to instill in our sailors a respect for the ocean, a love for the traditions of tall ship sailing, and, more than anything, to experience the sheer joy of a fresh breeze in the sails, the glory of a starry night at anchorage, and the bonding that takes place between a crew at sea.

Our captains are all 100 tons Masters, licensed by the United States Coast Guard, with certifications in sailing, as well as CPR and First Aid. Our captains and crew are all subject to pre-employment and random alcohol and drug tests, monitored by the U.S. Coast Guard. Our captains and crew combine for a total of over 50 years of traditional tall ship sailing experience.

CAMP SESSION DATES & FEES:
July 21 - July 27, 2014 - sailors entering 6th - 8th grade
July 28 - August 3, 2014 - sailors entering 9th - 12th grade

Many years ago, we were the first company serving young adults to require that all leaders have a Wilderness First Responder (WFR) medical certification. WFR training is far more advanced than standard first aid or wilderness first aid. In addition to this certification, we carry extensive first aid kits on all of our programs that include antibiotics and epinephrine. Contents, protocols, and standing orders are reviewed and updated every year by our Medical Director who is an MD.

Since our inception, RLT has been on the cutting edge of technological advances in communication. We began carrying Iridium satellite phones on all of our programs as soon as they were available. Today we continue to carry the latest in emergency communication systems. According to geographic location, programs are equipped with satellite phones, ground-to-air radios, and/or cellular phones providing the possibility of 24-hour access to medical help in case of emergency.

Camp Live Oak Hugh Taylor Birch State Park, A1A & Sunrise Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, 954-563-4880. A short walk from beachside shops and condominiums, this park is an oasis of tropical hammocks-a gift from Hugh Taylor Birch to Florida's posterity. His former estate preserves four distinct natural communities, nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway.

Oleta River State Park, 163rd St. & Intracoastal, North Miami, 305-940-4748. Florida's largest urban park, Oleta River State Park is located on Biscayne Bay in the busy Miami metropolitan area. Although it offers a variety of recreational opportunities, the park is best known for miles of off-road bicycling trails, ranging from novice trails to challenging trails for experienced bicyclists. Along the Oleta River, at the north end of the park, a large stand of beautiful mangrove forest preserves native South Florida plants and wildlife. Canoeists and kayakers can paddle the river to explore this amazing natural area. Swimming from a 1,200-foot sandy beach and saltwater fishing are also popular activities.

John Lloyd State Park, 6503 N. Ocean Dr., Dania Beach, 33004, 954-563-4880. Surf fishing, canoeing, swimming, nature study, boating, and picnicking will keep the whole family busy. For those interested in South Florida's underwater beauty, Lloyd Beach has one of the easiest and most interesting shore dives in the area. The park has two boat ramps with easy access to the ocean through the Port Everglades Inlet, which will please those who prefer to fish in open water. The mangrove-lined waterway is a scenic place to canoe, observe bird life, and take photographs. Located off A1A in the City of Hollywood.

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Camp Victory Military Adventures (CVMA) is a short-term, intense, rehabilitative program designed to help strong-willed boys overcome learning difficulties and behavioral habits that contribute to a path of self-destruction. Conducted during the summer months, it will teach boys how to respect authority and trust others while building on their own personal strengths. Each boy will have the opportunity to: Work cooperatively in a small group; Use higher-level thinking skills to solve real-life problems; Receive individualized instruction and counseling services.

CVMA is a wilderness style survival camp that brings young men back to the basics and teaches them the importance of teamwork. Thus, it is operated in a wilderness setting with minimal conveniences, which serves to maximize opportunities to search one's heart and learn purpose for life. Campers are challenged to build their own shelters, prepare their own food, and participate in physical and mental competitions. CVMA's goal is to help youth recognize their poor decision-making skills, learn how to eradicate those detrimental habits, and begin to build a positive foundation on which to base positive decision-making skills. It does so by helping young men recognize the error and danger of their negative decisions and behaviors, and identifying how those actions hurt themselves, their families, and the community in which they live.

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of CVMA are as follows: To assist parent(s) with the behavior modification of the youth; To improve the positive family dynamics; To enable youth to recognize negative decision-making skills; To enable youth to build a solid foundation on which to base decision-making skills; To bring to youth a greater awareness of God's creation, thus increasing their appreciation for it; To teach youth wilderness skills.

The objectives for each youth are as follows: To improve his decision-making skills; To identify negative habits and list ways to develop positive habits; To improve peer relationships by identifying negative peer characteristics and listing positive character traits that would be found in a positively-influencing peer. To learn wilderness skills and be able to demonstrate proficiency in each skill; To learn study skills, improving his academic ability.

CAMP COMPONENTS: The following components will be taught during CAMP. Wilderness Skills Food Procurement & Preparation Teaches sources of food in the wilderness and how to prepare food in a primitive setting. Water Procurement Teaches how to procure and sanitize water for sanitary utilization. Shelters Teaches how to identify a good shelter site and how to construct various types of shelters. Firecraft Teaches how to determine a proper site for a fire and how to construct the fire for various uses. Personal & Field Hygiene Emphasizes importance of personal hygiene particularly in a field environment, specifying ways to prevent diseases and infections. Discusses prevention of disease and medical problems; teaches treatment for bites, stings, and wounds.

Pioneering Explains the various uses of lashings to build structures and furniture. Requires that youth use pioneering skills to build such amenities. Land Navigation Acquaints youth with methods to navigate by dead reckoning, terrain feature association, and field-expedient methods. Animal Awareness Teaches habits of native animals and identifies characteristics and habits of dangerous animals. Explains importance of appreciating animals without disturbing them or their habitat. Plant Awareness Identifies characteristics of plants, including how to differentiate poisonous plants from non-poisonous. Explains importance of appreciating plants without disturbing them or their habitat.

Individual Counseling Provides opportunity for youth to discuss behavioral issues, past reasons for engaging in negative decisions, and helps to provide positive alternatives. Seeks to establish short- and long-term goals for youth, which is shared with the family. Academic Skills Emphasizes importance of diligently pursuing academic success; teaches study skills to utilize to improve academic potential. Many academic skills are taught and further developed through the teaching of Wilderness Skills and through the youth's journaling. Science Campers learn about plants, flowers, trees, astronomy, and animals through everyday Wilderness Skills. Some areas are emphasized, such as Plants & Animals, while others are inherent, such as the teaching of astronomy when constellations and stars are used in Land Navigation.

Writing Campers learn writing skills through their journaling experience. Each camper is additionally required to write some poetry and a short story. Mathematical Math skills are inherently taught during Land Navigation as various figuring and calculations are involved in azimuths, offsetting, and bypassing obstacles. When campers are not familiar with the basic mathematical functions, instructors will work individually with each youth so that each youth may successfully navigate using those math skills. Spiritual Emphasis Presents truths found in God's Word, the Bible, and relates those truths and principles to everyday life. Teaches methods for practical application of moral guidelines into daily decisions.

CAMPERS (YOUTH): CVMA accepts boys ages 10-16 who currently exhibit behavioral problems at school or at home. These behavioral problems may also include social or emotional issues. Because of its short duration, boys are not accepted who have current problems with the law; past unlawful activities will not prohibit a boy's entry into the program, but will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis by the administration. The following is a list of common characteristics of the type of boy who would benefit from this program: Strong-willed and disrespectful; Not achieving academically to his full potential; Uncooperative with parents and/or teachers; Needs self-motivation and discipline; Lacks self-respect and social skills; Needs a closer relationship with Parents. Parents who desire for their son to attend CVMA must complete the application process, and will be notified of their son's acceptance or rejection.

STAFFING: CVMA employs adults who desire to be a part of this life-changing ministry; its' staff are known as Instructors. Older teens who desire to be youth leaders are known as Cadet Instructors, and are utilized in assisting Instructors in teaching classes and monitoring the camp and campers. These Instructors and Cadet Instructors are chosen for their character values of integrity, respect, and honor, and for their desire to help boys learn to make right decisions. Instructors are responsible for supervising each daily activity and ensuring the safety of each Junior Instructor and camper throughout the duration of the camp. They must also give and supervise consequences for negative behaviors, keeping in mind that the purpose of CVMA is to change youth's lives, not just to provide a fun recreational time.
